Olive Glen Overnight 2(a-b)
7 January 2023 – 8 January 2023 SAST
CAMPING, WETLANDS, VIEWS, and LILIES. Early in January the high wetlands are particularly beautiful and the Nuwejaars-lilies in full bloom at the waterfall. There are two options:
- Arrive Saturday anytime, hike up with Bruce late p.m. to Leopard Rock (3km), and further 1km, to make camp at old manganese mine for the night. Early Sunday from manganese camp, hike up to waterfall to see the new year lillies (Gladioulus cardinalis) and take along own breakfast. Walk back down to tents mid a.m., break camp, walk back down to Olive Glen.
Bring – overnight stuff like sleeping mat or small tent, sleeping bag, supper & breakfast. Only small gas boilers, NO FIRES. Water 60m from manganese camp, plus plunge pool. No ablutions, but Ladies to the left of the big rock and Gentlemen to the right of the big rock. Take everything out with you again, even paper.
- Arrive Saturday anytime, drive to camp overnight at LZ camp. There is a big lawn with ablutions and braai place. Sunday early a.m. (slow hikers can start from 5.30 – 6 am already) hike up to the waterfall with day packs, meet Bruce’s group, walk back down to Olive Glen.
The club uses a grading system (given in brackets after the hike name) to make it easier for club members to communicate the difficultly of an outing. You can check out our Meets Grading page for details on how to use the grading system, or alternatively you can contact the meet leader directly if you are unsure of the difficulty of a meet.
